Málaga Report

Occasions are rare in which a composer is allowed to join a symphony orchestra playing his own work, for the simple pleasure of making art together. This was one of them, and a very special one.

Thanks to the initiative and enthusiasm of Maestro José María Moreno, music director of the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra, Gabriel Bussi was able not only to be present during the entire week of rehearsals, but he enjoyed the privilege of himself putting hands on the violin and sitting among his fellow violinists.

It was an intense week, in which the orchestra offered not only the three movements of the Suite Sinfónica de La Tribuna that had already been premiered by the Galicia Symphony Orchestra under Josep Pons, but also the world premiere of one more movement, and even a very emblematic one: the scene, in which Amparo, la Tribuna sparks her fellow tobacco workers' rage, reading to them from the revolutionary press, followed by the great final chorus with the "hymn to liberty", albeit without voices, obviously.

Maestro and orchestra threw in all their efforts and offered an energetic interpretation full of contrasts for an enthusiastic audience. Before each show, Javier Ozores and Gabriel Bussi offered information events, explaining several aspects surrounding the work, from the original literary creation by the great Emilia Pardo Bazán and its historical context, through the operatic adaptation by Javier Ozores, until the final cooperation between librettist and composer, and the creation of the Suite from themes of the opera.

Heavily applauded by both public and musicians, and this being a contemporary premiere, La Tribuna proves to have great potential and communicative power, far beyond the Galician context.
